Katy Perry to be honored at MTV VMAs amid ‘Lifetimes’ MV investigation

KatyCats, rejoice! Katy Perry is finally getting the recognition she deserves as she is set to be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s MTV VMAs.

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Thursday that the 39-year-old pop star will receive the prestigious recognition at a ceremony taking place at UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York, on September 11.

The award comes 16 years after her hit single “I Kissed a Girl” topped the charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, and after winning five VMAs to date.

The Michael Jackson Vanguard Award is the MTV VMA’s version of a lifetime achievement award. It has been around since 1984, when it was first presented by The Beatles. At the time, it was still called the Video Vanguard Award.

Other artists to receive such recognition include David Byrne, Madonna and Jackson himself. In 1991, the award was renamed in MJ’s honor, according to The Independent.

The last time Orlando Bloom’s partner attended the awards ceremony was in 2017. This year, she not only came to receive the award but also performed at the event.

Since 2008, Katy has released 14 songs that have charted on the Billboard Hot 100. She has also achieved nine No. 1 singles on the same chart, including “I Kissed a Girl”, “Hot n Cold”, “E.T.”, “Firework”, “California Gurls”, “Roar”, “Teenage Dream”, “Last Friday Night” and “Dark Horse”.

Speaking about Perry’s upcoming recognition, Paramount Music President Bruce Kilmer told THR: “Katy is a musical powerhouse and a true pop culture icon. With her groundbreaking creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages.”

“Katy’s talent will be on full display at the VMAs with a can’t-miss, career-spanning performance that celebrates her greatest moments and chart-topping hits,” he continued.

The 2024 MTV VMAs were originally scheduled to air live on September 10. However, the event was moved to air at the same time as the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

News of Perry’s award comes amid controversy surrounding her music video for “Lifetimes.” According to the Balearic Islands Department of Environment, the singer-songwriter filmed her video in a restricted area on the island of S’Espalmador without permission.

The agency said that although Perry’s activities on the island did not constitute an “environmental crime,” they still violated its environmental regulations, so officials are investigating the matter.

The male singer has yet to respond to this controversy.
