Early Life, Career & Education
Katya Petrovna Zamolodchikova, a beloved contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race and one of America’s most influential drag queens, has captivated audiences with her creativity, resourcefulness, and unparalleled determination. Born on May 1, 1982, Katya, a Taurus, hails from Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA, and is of Irish descent. Raised in a devout Catholic family, she developed a passion for the art of drag, which eventually led her to fame.
Katya attended Marlborough High School and began college at Boston University. However, after a year, she transferred to the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she majored in performance and video art at the renowned Studio for Interrelated Media. While at MCAD, she discovered her love for drag and created a Russian-inspired drag image.
Inspired by her favorite gymnast, Elena Zamolodchikova, as well as comedic talents like Tracy Ullman, Maria Bamford, Lana del Rey, and Amy Sedaris, Katya created her stage name: Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, or simply Katya. Her fluency in Russian and her relentless dedication to perfecting her accent, aided by resources like “Pronounce It Perfectly,” added authenticity to her character.
Katya’s early experiences performing at local drag shows in Boston and at Jacques Cabaret gave her the confidence to audition for RuPaul’s Drag Race. Despite facing rejection three times, she persevered and eventually made it to the show’s seventh season, where she became a fan favorite and was crowned “Miss Congeniality.”
In 2016, Katya returned to the RuPaul franchise for the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars, where she once again proved her incredible talent, finishing as runner-up. Since her breakthrough on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Katya has been involved in numerous collaborative projects across various digital platforms, most notably with drag queen Trixie Mattel.
