Early life
Kelis Rogers-Mora was born on August 21, 1979, on the Upper Westside of Manhattan, to Kenneth, a jazz musician and Pentecostal pastor, formerly a professor at Wesleyan University, and Eveliss, a fashion designer.
Kelis has three siblings. Kelis’ mother encouraged her to pursue a singing career. She was kicked out of her parents’ home at the age of 16 for bad behavior as she sometimes argued with her mother.
School life
Growing up, Kelis joined the church choir and played violin, piano, and saxophone while attending Manhattan Country School and then continued her studies at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts.
She formed the three-member R&B group BLU (Black Ladies United) at that school. Kelis worked as a bartender and saleswoman at a clothing store before graduating from high school.
A friend then introduced Kelis to The Neptunes, which included Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo; they formed a strong relationship and with their help, she landed a recording contract with Virgin Records.
Music career
Kelis began her singing career in the mid-1990s with her debut album Kaleidoscope, released by Virgin Records. The album reached number seven on the UK Gold Albums Chart.
Her debut album became a milestone in her singing career. Her second studio album, Wanderland, performed by The Neptunes, was released in 2001.
