Early life and education

Kelly McGillis grew up in Los Angeles and was born in Newport Beach, California on July 9, 1957. She is the eldest of three daughters born to Virginia Joan (née Snell), a homemaker, and Donald Manson McGillis, a doctor. McGillis attended Newport Harbor High School.

After high school, she pursued her passion for acting and attended the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts at the Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California.

She later moved to New York City to attend the Juilliard School, graduating in 1983.

In her personal life, McGillis has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Juilliard classmate Boyd Black in 1979, but they divorced in 1981.
