Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl 59 Headliner Gig Sparks Backlash; Fans Want Lil Wayne

Kendrick Lamar will be hosting the halftime show at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans next year, but not everyone is excited about it.

The NFL announced Lamar as a starter in the next Super Bowl via a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday.

The “Not Like Us” hitmaker confirmed the news by releasing a video, in which he appeared to allude to his victory over Drake in their viral rap battle a few months ago.

“You know, this is just one chance to win a championship. There’s no second round,” Lamar said cheekily.

The news received a mixed response on social media, with many saying they were looking forward to seeing Lamar perform his hits at one of the biggest television events in the country.

However, some celebrities and Lil Wayne fans have objected to Lamar being the headliner, arguing that the New Orleans rapper should have been chosen or at least included in the show.

“So the next two Super Bowls after this one in February (New Orleans) will be in LA. But Wayne is ignored and Kendrick is the headliner in New Orleans lol,” DJ Akademiks wrote on Instagram.

In his Instagram post, New Orleans-based rapper and record executive Master P praised Lamar and admitted that his being the headliner of the 2025 Super Bowl was “totally deserved.”

However, he said he had to “agree with the fans that [Lil Wayne] should also be part of this celebration.”

“He’s one of the greatest living Hop artists, still relevant, and he’s a New Orleans native,” Master P added. “Let’s not miss this cultural moment in the South. Life is too short! We have to give our legends flowers while they’re here.”

One fan asserted, “New Orleans is angry.”

“Lil Wayne in New Orleans at the Super Bowl is what should have happened. Start a petition. Kendrick was inspired by Wayne,” another person asserted.

“Anything other than Lil Wayne being the HOST at the Super Bowl in NOLA is completely unacceptable,” a third user declared.

“It’s crazy that Apple picked him over Drake or Wayne in New Orleans. We know who’s better,” one X user wrote alongside a photo of Drake and Lil Wayne.

Some are predicting that Lamar will invite Lil Wayne to his halftime show as a special guest.

“I definitely think Wayne is performing. I think they’re keeping it a secret,” one Instagram user suggested.

But many others were excited to see Lamar perform at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show.

“This is going to be epic. [as f**k]”, one X user declared, while another wrote, “We will ALL be watching!”

“The ‘W’ was taken and kept,” a third user commented, referring to the battle between Lamar and Drake.

“A whole stadium singing ‘AND IT’S PROBABLY A MINORRRRRR’ would be pretty impressive,” another wrote, referring to Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us” with Drake.

Lamar has appeared on stage at Super Bowl LVI alongside Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent, but this is the first time he has had his own show.

Super Bowl LVI will be held on February 9, 2025 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
