Kgothatso Montjane is a talented South African wheelchair tennis player. She was born on 3 June 1986.
She was born in Seshego, Limpopo, South Africa. Her appearance in 2018 made her the first black South African to play at Wimbledon.
Despite her disability, her passion and love for tennis made her stand out. She was named South Africa’s female disabled athlete of the year on three (3) different occasions (2005, 2011 and 2015).
Kgothatso Montjane has so far won 29 singles matches and has won other tournaments including the Belgian Wheelchair Open and the Swiss Open.

Early life
Kgothatso Montjane was born in Seshego, a suburb of Polokwane, Limpopo in South Africa, on 3 June 1986.
She was born with a congenital disorder called amniotic band syndrome, which affected her arms and legs. Her second foot was amputated when she was 12 years old.
Because of her disability, all the other children in the neighborhood looked down on her and did not want to play with her. She was seen as different because she could not run or jump like the other children.
It was not easy for Kgothatso Montjane as she came from a poor background. Her circumstances and the distance to school forced her to give up her studies before she found out about a boarding school for the disabled.
With the facilities and light sports equipment available, she started her career as a tennis player. Her parents, during this challenging time, did not give up on her.
They supported her wholeheartedly by sending her to school and encouraging her towards a bright future.
Since childhood, Serena Williams has been her role model and the tennis player she admires the most. She has constantly strived to improve herself and her tennis skills.
Career
Kgothatso Montjane is a successful tennis player ranked in the top ten (10) by the ITF. In 2005, she reached her highest ever ranking of fifth (5th) in the world.
She was also named South Africa’s female athlete with a disability in 2005, 2001 and 2015 consecutively.
She has participated in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open, the Garros Open and the US Open, and she has been able to reach the quarterfinals and semifinals in singles. Additionally, she has reached the semifinals of all doubles tournaments.
Kgothatso Montjane was a member of the South African team at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics, but did not win any medals. She also represented South Africa at the World Team Cup in 2009 and 2011. She struggled to qualify for the prestigious Wimbledon Championships in 2018, making her the first black South African to qualify in history.
That same year, she also participated in the US Open and became the first African wheelchair tennis player to qualify for all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year.
