Khayelihle Nkosinathi Mthethwa (born 25 November 1987), better known by his stage name Khaya Mthethwa, is an accomplished South African gospel singer, songwriter and musician. He is also a composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist.
He is best known for winning the eighth season of the television singing competition South African Idol, becoming the first black person to win the award.
He has had a love and passion for music since he was a child.

Early life and education
Khaya Mthethwa was born on November 25, 1987 in KwaZulu-Natal and has been surrounded by music and musicians since childhood. He has a sibling named Mnqobi Mthethwa.
He is 36 years old and was born into the family of Bhekithemba Mthethwa (father) and Lulu Mthethwa (mother).
After graduating from high school, he decided to pursue a career in music and enrolled at the Durban University of Technology to study jazz performance. There he honed his skills as a singer and instrumentalist. His debut solo album, Rise, was released in 2017.

In 2017, Khaya Mthethwa married his ex-wife Ntandoyenkosi ‘Ntando’ Kunene but they decided to break off the engagement.

In 2012, Khaya Mthethwa returned to sing backing vocals on Ntokozo Mbambo’s Filled album. In 2012, he auditioned for the South African Idol competition, intending to broaden his musical horizons by trying different genres. He ultimately won the competition. He received over 80% of the general public vote.
Khaya Mthethwa discovered her love for singing in high school and made her tenor debut as a backing vocalist on Joyous Celebration co-founder Mthunzi Namba’s Mercy album.
He was then invited to join Celebration 2010 two days before the live recording of Celebration 15.
Khaya Mthethwa hosts the gospel television show Gospel Alive which premiered on Multichoice DSTV’s Mzansi Magic Channel on November 3, 2013. He produced the show in collaboration with content producer Tebogo Rameetse.
He was ordained a priest in 2015. In 2014, he released a live DVD recording, The Uprising. This was followed by The Dawn in 2016 and Mkhulumsebenzi in 2018.
In 2013, he participated in another television event, Battle of the Choirs, as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Choir and won the championship. Khaya Mthethwa is a self-taught keyboardist, guitarist, drummer and percussionist.
He sings a variety of music genres including gospel, pop, jazz, and R&B. He is also a songwriter and wrote most of the songs on his debut album, For You.
