Chief Sandy Adeniyi Adegeye MFR (born 22 September 1946), known worldwide as “King Sandy Ade” is a Nigerian Juju singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is considered one of the first African pop musicians to achieve international success and has been called one of the most influential musicians of all time.

In 1967, King Sunny Adé formed his own backing band, which eventually became known as the African Beats. In the 1970s, he achieved national success in Nigeria and founded his own independent label, Sunny Alade.

In 1982, King Sunny Adé signed with Island Records and achieved international success with the albums Juju Music (1982) and Synchro System (1983); the latter earned him a Grammy nomination, the first for a Nigerian artist.

His album Odu released in 1998 was also nominated for a Grammy Award. Kim Sunny Ade is currently the Chairman of the Nigerian Music Copyright Society.

Early life and education

Born in Osogbo, King Sanny Ade is a son of Nigerian royal families from Ondo and Akure, making him an Omoba of the Yoruba ethnic group. King Sanny Ade was born on September 22, 1946, to Samuel Adeniyi Adegeye, a church organist, and Maria Adegeye (née Adesida), a businessman.

Being part of the Adesida dynasty, his mother’s relatives included her father, Oba Adesida I, who ruled Akure for 60 years. Later, they had her nephew and King Sani Ade’s cousin, Oba Adebiyi Adeboye Adesida Afonbiowo II, who also served as the King of Akure.

King Sunny Ade was awarded the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2008 for his immense contribution to the world music scene and was inducted into the African Popular Music Hall of Fame in July 2009 at the African Music Festival in Brooklyn, USA.
