“Kingdom Hearts” is a series of action role-playing games produced by Japanese game designers Tetsuya Nomura and Shinji Hashimoto. It is developed and published by Square Enix in partnership with The Walt Disney Company.
The main character, Sora, embarks on an adventure with Disney characters as well as characters from Square Enix games such as Final Fantasy and The World Ends With You. The series includes thirteen games on different platforms, with more planned for the future.
The book was critically acclaimed and commercially successful, selling more than 36 million copies worldwide. There’s also plenty of related merchandise, including soundtracks, action figures, books, card games and comics.
One of the latest additions to the series is Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, announced by Square Enix in April 2022. Designed for iOS and Android devices, this mobile game takes place in Scala and Caelum between the events of Union X and Dark Road.
Although the closed beta was originally scheduled for late 2022, it was later postponed to October 30, 2023. The full game is scheduled for release in 2024, making it an exciting addition to the Kingdom Hearts universe.
Kingdom Hearts Gameplay
The Kingdom Hearts game combines action role-playing and hack-and-slash elements. They follow linear progression with a focus on telling the story through cutscenes, although there are also side quests for added bonuses.
The protagonist Sora is the protagonist in most of the game, with AI-controlled characters such as Donald Duck and Goofy assisting in combat. Real-time combat involves physical attacks, magic, and summons, and each game has its own unique combat system. Players can use items to heal during combat.
Gummy ships are a key feature and are the primary mode of travel between different game worlds. The gameplay of Gummi Ships is similar to rail shooters and is an improvement over the series.
Most games include a journal accessible from the main menu that records information about the story, characters, enemies, and locations. In some games, the diary is maintained by Jiminy Cricket or the protagonist himself.
Influenced by the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts incorporates RPG elements such as an experience point system for character development. Defeating enemies earns experience, allowing you to level up your character, enhance your abilities, and share experience among party members.
