Knives Out plot

The storyline revolves around the Thrombey family, a wealthy and influential family who gather at their luxurious estate in Massachusetts to celebrate the 85th birthday of famed mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey. However, this joyful moment took a grim turn when Harlan’s body was discovered the next morning, his throat brutally slit. Initially, authorities believe it was a suicide, but a mysterious benefactor enlists mysterious private investigator Benoit Blanc to investigate further.

As Blanc digs deeper into the case, he uncovers a complex web of tensions within the family. Harlan recently had violent conflicts with his son-in-law Richard, daughter-in-law Joni, son Walter and grandson Ransom. Blanc’s investigation reveals the deep resentment, betrayal, and greed beneath the surface of this seemingly wealthy, perfect family.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Blanc, Harlan’s nurse, Marta Cabrera, had inadvertently mixed up his medications the night of his birthday celebration. This unintentional mistake resulted in a morphine overdose, leaving Marta heartbroken and unable to save him due to the lack of an antidote. Realizing that Marta would face consequences if her involvement was discovered, Harlan made a selfless act of sacrifice, instructing her to find an alibi while he inflicted a fatal throat wound on himself.

Marta, who suffers from physical ailments caused by lying, gave truthful but incomplete answers during interrogation. She reluctantly agrees to assist Blanc in his investigation, but withholds crucial evidence related to her role in Harlan’s death. The shocking disclosure of Harlan’s will further fuels the family’s resentment and anger, leaving Marta the sole heir to Harlan’s vast fortune.

Amid the chaos, Marta forms an alliance with Ransom, who helps her escape the family’s control but also exploits her vulnerability for personal gain. Meanwhile, other members of the family used coercion, persuasion, and threats to force Marta to give up her inheritance.

However, Marta receives a ransom note containing part of Harlan’s toxicology report, sending her and Ransom on a journey to the medical examiner’s office. To their surprise, the office mysteriously burned down and potential evidence disappeared. Meanwhile, Marta receives an email inviting her to a secret meeting with her blackmailer. In a series of events, Ransom found himself being pursued and eventually arrested after a brief car chase.

At the designated rendezvous point, Marta discovers that her loyal butler Fran is in a drugged state, prompting Marta to provide life-saving assistance and urgently call for medical assistance. It was then that she admitted to Blanc that she was involved in Harlan’s death, not knowing that Ransom had framed her. Marta is determined to take responsibility for her actions, even though doing so would disqualify her from the inheritance under the “Killer Rules.”

Back at Thornby House, Marta stumbles upon a complete copy of Fran’s toxicology report, which she immediately gives to Blanc. Reports revealed that Harlan had only trace amounts of morphine in his system, contradicting the initial hypothesis of an overdose. Blanc then revealed his reasoning to Ransom and Marta, explaining that Harlan had informed Ransom of his intention to leave everything to Marta, leading Ransom to manipulate Harlan’s drugs and frame Marta for the murder .

However, it turns out that Marta, subconsciously and instinctively aware, had actually given Harlan the correct medication.

Who is the real murderer in “Knives Out”?

Harlan Thromby’s death was the result of his own actions, and he chose to end his life by slitting his own throat with a knife. The tragic thing about his death, however, is that it was completely unnecessary. Contrary to the belief that Harlan’s overdose of morphine was fatal, he did not receive any such dose. In fact, there was no need for him to take such drastic measures.

The real mastermind of this elaborate plot was Harlan’s grandson Ransom. Ransom devised a plan in which he would have Nurse Marta unknowingly administer a fatal dose by manipulating the drug labels in her bag. He further ensured that the antidote was stolen, leaving Harlan with no chance of saving his life.

However, due to unforeseen events, the vial was accidentally repositioned when the medication was knocked over. So Marta used her intuition and expertise to give Harlan the correct and safe dose.

Throughout the film, Marta struggles with guilt over her belief that her negligence in verifying the label led to Harlan’s death. Ironically, it was her failure to check the label that actually prevented fatal consequences. Marta’s astute judgment based on the consistency of the liquid allowed her to take the appropriate dose despite Ransom’s interference. As Benoit Blanc explains, Marta’s proficiency as a nurse was ultimately the reason she got it right.

Although Harlan technically committed suicide, Ransom was responsible for his death. If Ransom had not tampered with the drug’s label, Marta would never have thought she had accidentally taken a fatal dose of morphine. Therefore, Harlan would not feel the need to sacrifice himself to protect her. However, Ransom’s culpability was not limited to attempted murder, as he committed several other crimes, including outright murder, in a desperate attempt to cover his tracks.
