Early life
Koffee was born on February 16, 2000 in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Her birth is registered as Mikayla Victoria Simpson. Her mother’s name is Jo-Anne Williams.
Koffee’s early musical influences can be traced to her mother’s religious background. Jo-Anne Williams is a Christian and attends the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Jo-Anne Williams works with the Department of Health and is an occasional actress.
Koffee started singing when she joined her local church choir. By the age of 12, she taught herself to play the guitar. The guitar she practiced was borrowed from a friend. She also began composing lyrics and was inspired by listening to reggae singer, Protoje.

Koffee’s musical talent became famous after she posted a video of herself singing on Instagram. In 2017, she composed and released her first single titled Legend. The song was created using just her voice and the playing of an acoustic guitar. Legend is a tribute to Jamaican sprinting superstar Usain Bolt. The song increased her popularity worldwide because Usain Bolt reposted it on his Instagram page, making the song more viral.
That same year, Koffee released her debut single, Burning, which was inspired by her desire to continue growing despite the initial disappointment of not being able to get into sixth form after graduating from high school. Burning was a huge success around the world; it spent three weeks at number one on The Foundation Radio Network’s Top 30 Reggae Chart.
In December 2018, Koffee released Raggamuffin, a song that speaks out against gun violence and government indifference towards youth. In 2019, she was included in BBC Radio 1Xtra’s list of “Hot For 2019” artists. She soon dropped the Major Lazer-produced single, Toast.
Koffee signed a recording contract with Columbia Records UK in 2018. Her first project with the label was an EP titled Rapture and it was released on March 14, 2019. Throne’s music video, one of the singles on the project, was filmed in Spanish Town and takes viewers on a tour of her hometown. The music video debuted on The Fader on January 22, 2022.
She released her first crossover collaboration single, W, in 2019. The song features vocals from Hip Hop artist Gunna. Additionally, in 2019, Tory Lonez did a remix of Koffee’s song Toast as part of his international Fargo Project.
EP Koffee, Koffee, won Best Reggae Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. She was 19 years old when she won the award and was the youngest person and only woman to be awarded in this category . In 2020, she released two hit songs, Lockdown and Pressure. She was featured in John Legend’s single Don’t Walk Away.
She released her highly anticipated debut album, Gifted, on March 25, 2022. So far, the album has received positive reviews. The singles on Gifted are about perseverance and overcoming hardships. The 10-track project is a fusion of dancehall reggae, fusion reggae, pop and R&B.
Gifted is an amazing work of art as Koffee and other top musicians created it. Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Lionel Richie and Ryan Bailey have songwriting credits on the project.
