But it’s still rare for non-artists to create parodies of obscure musical styles that, against all odds, become surprise hits before they’re even released.
Here’s what happened: On July 28, singer and influencer Audrey Trullinger and comedian Kyle Gordon produced a video clip titled “Every European Dance Song of the 1990s.” The full song, titled “Planet of the Bass,” was originally scheduled to be released on Spotify on August 22 but was pushed up a week to August 15 due to its extreme popularity on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram.
It also debuted live last night at a Brooklyn nightclub. The video, beloved by millennials who have a special affection for a pop culture era, has racked up 5 million views on TikTok and nearly 90 million views on Twitter as of publication.
With his persona skewering white hip-hop critics and foreign representations of Americans as “the unhappy kid,” Gordon first rose to fame on TikTok in 2020. The inspiration behind “Planet of the Bass,” a delightfully absurd parody of ’90s Eurodance songs in which a beautiful woman sings about love and togetherness while a deep-voiced rapper stirs up the crowd in broken English, was “DJ Crazy Times,” a European DJ at the turn of the millennium.

All of the women intentionally lip-synced, but they had fun playing Biljana Electronica, a fictional Eurodance pop queen. For the song, Kyle recorded three different TikTok videos. In each video, he played DJ Crazy Times, but he chose a different woman as the star.
More than seven million people watched the first “Planet of the Bass” TikTok, which was filmed inside the Oculus at the World Trade Center. Audrey Trullinger, an actress and content producer, played Biljana Electronica. Mara Olney, a content creator, played Biljana Electronica in the second video, which Kyle said was filmed in Croatia.
In the third video, comedian and YouTube actress Sabrina Brier took on the role of Biljana. Kyle said “Planet of the Bass” will be released as an official single on August 15, 2023, given its popularity on TikTok.
