Early life
Lamar Odom was born on November 6, 1979, in South Jamaica, Queens, New York, to Joe Odom and Cathy Mercer. Growing up, Odom had a difficult time. He lost his mother to colon cancer when he was 12 years old.
His father was a drug addict and regularly used heroin. His grandmother, Mildred, raised him. Odom switched three high schools and eventually became a basketball star at his third. He was named Marching Band Player of the Year, among other notable honors.
Odom had received a scholarship to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After questions arose about his ACT score and he was arrested for soliciting prostitution, the school revoked his scholarship.
Instead, Odom enrolled at the University of Rhode Island and played one season before entering 1998-99 NBA draft. He earned First Team All-Conference honors and was named Rookie of the Year.
Professional career
The 6-foot-10 forward was selected as the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers after his freshman year at the University of Rhode Island. He joined Dwyane Wade, with the Miami Heat, in the 2003-2004 season.
