Her father Deenanath Mangeshkar is a Marathi and Konkani classical singer and theater actor. Her mother Shewanti (later renamed Sudamati) was a Gujarati woman from Tarna, Bombay Presidency (now in northwestern Maharashtra).
She is the oldest child in the family. Meena, Asha, Usha and Hridaynath are her siblings in order of birth; all of them are accomplished singers and musicians.
