Early life and education
Alyssa Michelle Stephens (aka Latto) was born on December 22, 1998, in Columbus, Ohio, USA. She is the daughter of Misti Pitts and Shayne Stephens. As a teenager, she moved to Georgia in hopes of increasing her popularity. Clay Co brought her street credibility.
Her mother, Misti Pittsi, is white, while Lato’s biological father, Shayne Stephens, is black. She has two sisters: Brooklyn Nikole and Kay Stephens.
She was bullied in school for being “light-skinned” and “funny-looking,” which prompted her to adopt the stage name “Miss Mulatto” when she began her rap career, a play on the racial classification “mixed.” She attended Lovejoy High School in Clayton County.
Lato became a rapper and began writing rap songs at the age of ten. Before becoming a musician, she participated in drag competitions.
Personal life
In May 2019, Lato was arrested for theft after being mistaken for another woman. She released the song “Fuck Rice Street” to prove her innocence and anger at the police.
Rumor has it that Lato was in a relationship with rapper 21 Savage after she shared a photo of him on Twitter. However, the relationship was never confirmed and the two never really got along.
Lato has dated celebrities such as Key Glock (2019-2020) and Bandit Gang Marco (2015-2017).
Profession
In 2016, Lato joined the Lifetime reality show The Rap Game, hosted by Jermaine Dupri and Queen Latifah. The eight-week show was set up like a boot camp and watched young rappers compete against each other. She won the competition. At the time, she performed under the stage name “Miss Mulatto”.
Latour’s store, Pitstop Clothing, opened in Jonesboro, Georgia, in 2017. Jermaine Dupri offered her a record deal with So So Def Records, but she turned it down, saying the money wasn’t enough. Instead, she chose to become an independent artist.
Latto’s second mixtape, titled Latto Let ‘Em Know, was released in April 2017. Molly Brazy, Lil Key, 2-Crucial, and Silentó were a few of the artists featured on this mixtape. The single “Response Diss” is a diss song directed at The Rap Game competitor Young Lyric. Due to their ongoing feud, both men have made diss songs insulting drug use, homosexuality, and their experiences on the show.
Latto’s song “Bitch from da Souf” was released in January 2019. In May 2019, she was invited to perform at Rolling Loud in Miami, Florida. Rolling Loud is an annual hip-hop festival. Her second album, Big Latto, was released in June 2019. It was preceded by “Bitch from da Souf”. This single was her first major hit. It peaked at number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was rated gold in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Later, rappers Saweetie and Trina collaborated on a remix of the song. The song was included on Mulatto’s third EP, Hit the Latto, which was released on December 12.
Following the controversy surrounding the word “Mulatto”, in January 2021, it was revealed that Rato would be changing her stage name from “Mulatto” to “Mulatto”.
Latto was named MTV’s Global Artist of the Month in February 2021. In March 2021, she became the first female rapper from Atlanta to earn gold and platinum certifications for her solo albums, thanks to “Bitch from da Souf” (2019) and “Muwop” (2020).
After facing criticism for the racially charged nature of her stage name, she announced in multiple interviews in May 2021 that she had officially settled on a new stage name.
On May 18, it was revealed that Mulatto’s name had been changed to Latto on streaming services, a change that was initially reflected in her guest appearance on Toosii’s album Thank You for Believing, where she went by the name Latto. She released a new song titled “The Biggest” to coincide with the reveal of her new identity.
