Meet Yanise Monét, Wife of Comedian Sam Jay
Yanise Monét is comedian Sam Jay’s longtime girlfriend/soon-to-be wife. They met through mutual friends in Atlanta more than a decade ago. The host of HBO’s new late-night talk show PAUSE with Sam Jay recalls that they had just had a brief encounter at a club before their friend’s car broke down in front of Monét’s house that night. “I was so into her,” Jay recalls.
“And then we just hung out and that’s how it started,” she said. “It went on like that for years, dating and breaking up, talking and not necessarily dating fully, while we were dating other people.”
No matter who they were dating at the time, they always considered each other family. According to Yanise, “I define family as the people in my circle whose energy resonates with me.”
However, Sam has shared a few details about Yanise on her Instagram. In a tweet from 2015, Sam tweeted, “I almost didn’t marry my wife because she had Dreds so I guess she’s going to torture me with facts about Lauryn Hill.”
The tweet suggests they’ve been married since at least August 2015. While we don’t know much about when the couple’s relationship began, they regularly show off their love for each other on Instagram.
In an Instagram post, Sam wrote, “We have had our ups and downs like everyone else, but this woman has always exceeded my expectations! I type this while looking up at the sky in a private, light-pollution-free villa by the ocean! We dreamed & realized the life we live now over 10 years ago on the purple couch in my living room! & she continues to work hard every day to make our dreams come true. So grateful!”
The post suggests they’ve known each other since before 2009 and have been together for over a decade. In fact, Sam’s interview with PEOPLE revealed that they’ve been together for 15 years (as of 2021). As they recount their love story from their sun-drenched New York City apartment, it’s clear that the couple has developed a humorous shorthand over the years.
“We’ve always been friends,” Jay told PEOPLE. Pride The thing about their on-again, off-again relationship is, “And I think over time, just connecting with each other and not being able to break that bond, someone becomes your family. So even if we weren’t necessarily dating, I always felt like she was someone who would always be in my life.”
The couple moved to Los Angeles along the way before settling in New York City, where Jay began writing for Saturday Night Live in 2017 and has since received two Emmy nominations. Jay has also used their relationship as material for some great stand-up comedy, but Monét insists it’s all just for fun and she’s “never surprised” by it.
“We have a lot of fun. We laugh a lot,” Jay added. “To me, she’s really funny, and we both have a sense of humor about ourselves, so we can joke around with each other.”
Sam loves to tease her co-stars. She joins her onstage, but the teasing extends offstage, too. “We bicker a lot and wipe each other’s snot,” Jay jokes. “It’s very childish, but I think we care for each other, too. She prays for me a lot. It’s a big show of love, and she’s very wise to me. So I consider it an act of love, for sure. And I pay for everything.”
Despite facing the deaths of both her father and stepmother when she was young, Jay and Monét gradually created their own family.
“I think life has put me in a situation where I have to rely on friends and people more than usual,” she reflected.
“After my mom died and I became more distant from my family, I had to find connections with people through going to Atlanta for school or coming out,” she said. “And so now my definition of family is really more based on personal connections than blood.”
Fun fact: Sam Jay proposed to Yanise Monét in January 2022. On Valentine’s Day, Yanise shared that they had been engaged for a month.
