But Dominique was actually originally cast as Marissa, not Dre! “I’m used to being a likeable or likable character and, honestly, you get comfortable with that—I love that!” Fishback revealed ahead of the March 17 premiere of Swarm. “But I had to get out of my own way to be the artist, the actor, that I came here to be.”

So she chose to play Dre.

Recalling the conversation when Dominique first asked for the role, Donald Glover said, “I was like, ‘You want to play a killer? Oh, really?’ She seemed so sweet, like someone you’d want to take care of, but she wanted to do the opposite, which I completely understood even in my own career. She wanted to expand, and I was happy to let her do that.”

Thanks to Dominique’s dedication as an actress, she even made it to Forbes’ 2019 “30 Under 30 – Hollywood & Entertainment” list.
