Legends of Runeterra

Legends of Runeterra (LoR) is a digital trading card game developed and published by Riot Games in 2020. It draws inspiration from Magic: The Gathering and aims to make the genre more accessible. The game is free-to-play, monetized by purchasing cosmetics, and runs on Windows, iOS, and Android. Players engage in one-on-one combat, strategically using cards from ten different regions, each with a unique play style. Different from other card games, one of its distinctive features is the alternation of attack and defense.

LoR incorporates characters from Riot’s League of Legends, and the rich Runeterra universe provides thematic depth to the cards. Lauded for its rich progression, user-friendly gameplay, and high-quality visuals, Legends of Runeterra has received positive reviews and industry accolades, cementing its status as a critically acclaimed digital card game.

Legends of Runeterra gameplay

In Legends of Runeterra, gameplay unfolds in intense one-on-one duels as each player strives to reduce their opponent’s Nexus health from an initial 20 points to zero. Strategic combinations of cards from up to two different areas form the core of the game. At the beginning, players are dealt four cards and they can choose to replace any of them with a random card from the deck. The ebb and flow of each game is controlled by a mana system; players start with zero mana and gain 1 mana each round, up to a maximum of 10. Unused mana is stored as spell mana for future turns.

Combat dynamics become more prominent with the introduction of “attack tokens,” symbols that indicate which player can attack or defend. This token alternates between players each round, creating a tactical seesaw. Cards are divided into categories such as Champions, Followers, Spells, and Landmarks, each of which contributes to different strategic possibilities. Champions originate from League of Legends and have unique upgrade abilities that allow them to evolve into more powerful versions. Unit cards representing champions and non-champions have attack and health statistics that affect damage dealt and sustained.

Spell cards categorized by speed (Slow, Fast, Burst, and Focus) add an extra layer of decision-making. The Monuments of Power expansion brings a new dimension with landmarks, introducing a countdown mechanic that triggers effects after a certain number of rounds. Overall, Legends of Runeterra thrives on complex gameplay that combines strategic depth, dynamic combat pacing, and rich lore of the League of Legends universe.
