Early life and education
Linda Jean Burney was born on April 25, 1957 in Whitton, Australia. She was raised by her father, Nonny Ingram, but her mother’s name is not known to the media. She grew up with two siblings, Nina and Billy Laing.
Burney attended Whitton Primary School and Leeton High School for her first four years of secondary school, before transferring to Penrith High School for her final two years.
Burney made history as one of the first Aboriginal students to graduate from Mitchell College of Advanced Education (now Charles Sturt University), where she obtained a Diploma of Education in 1978. In 2002, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from Charles Sturt University.
Career
Linda Jean Burney began her career as a teacher at Lethbridge Park Public School in Sydney’s west in 1979. She then joined the Aboriginal Education (Policy) Unit of the NSW Department of Education from 1981 to 1983.
During her time there, she was actively involved in the New South Wales Aboriginal Education Advisory Group (NSW AECG) from 1983 to 1998, where she played a key role in the development and implementation of Australia’s first Aboriginal education policy.
In recognition of her dedication and leadership, she was elected president of AECG in 1988.
Linda Jean Burney is a prominent Australian politician who has held various positions in the Labor Party and the New South Wales Parliament.
She has a strong background in Aboriginal affairs having served as Deputy Director General and Director General of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs in NSW.
Burney is also a member of the left-wing Labor Party and has served as Deputy National President and National President of the Australian Labor Party.

In September 2008, she was promoted to Minister of Community Services and in December 2009, she was appointed Minister of State for Planning.
Despite her various ministerial appointments, Burney’s commitment to community service and volunteering remained a top priority. She was the lead minister on the government’s “Keeping Them Safe” reform plan, which implemented the recommendations of the Special Commission into Child Protection Services.
Burney was also the inaugural patron of the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, demonstrating her commitment to supporting and recognising the contributions of volunteers in the community.
However, in 2016, Burney resigned from state parliament to run for federal parliament. She was elected to the House of Representatives for the seat of Barton in the 2016 federal election, becoming the first Aboriginal woman to be elected to the House of Representatives.
Burney was appointed Minister for Human Services and Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence in the Federal Labor Party.
She has also served as Minister for Families and Social Services, Minister for Indigenous Australians and Minister for the Public Service.
