Lisa Yamada talks about the brutal summer
Cruel Summer returns for a second season on May 31, 2022, and it features a bunch of new characters and a new town. However, Lisa Yamada is just one of the supporting cast members who plays Queen Bee Parker, one of the suspects in the story.
“Parker is a little bit of a bitch, I mean. She’s not very approachable or likable at first. She’s the leader of the group,” Lisa explains of her character. “Parker is very much like Regina George in Mean Girls in the sense that she’s the leader of the group, like I mentioned. But she has the best clothes, the best hair, the best makeup.”
As this season returns to the Y2K timeline and aesthetic, the character Lisa is “a Y2K grunge style person—influenced by Gwen Stefani in her “No Doubi” era and Avril Lavigne in her “Sk8er Boi” era.”
That said, Lisa’s favorite part of filming was the costumes and the hair and makeup team. “We had the most amazing costume and hair and makeup team. They were so collaborative,” she says.
Every morning, the actress would walk into the Hair & Makeup trailer and they’d ask, “Okay, so what are you doing today?” before she’d show them her giant Pinterest board.
Now, back to her character, although Lisa describes her as “unapproachable”, she is just a teenage girl who is dealing with her insecurities and looking for male validation. She doesn’t have the best female friendships, so she doesn’t know what it means to be a girl’s girl and be kind.
Parker is very different from Lisa in real life. But the actress enjoyed playing the mean girl. “It was fun to explore that darker side of me,” she said. “Even if other people don’t like her, you have to figure out why you like her. And why you see the world the way she does. It was fun to play her and prove people wrong.”
