Early life

Loyiso Nongxa was born in Indwe on 22 October 1953 into a family of teachers.

Born into a family with a tradition of learning, he received great attention from his father, a school principal.

Loyiso Nongxa’s mother’s sole responsibility is to take care of the family at home.

Education

As the son of the school Principal, Loyiso Nongxa had no choice but to attend an excellent school to begin his primary education.

Loyiso Nongxa was admitted to the University of Fort Hare (UFT), where he studied and graduated with a BA Honours degree in 1976.

He was also a rugby player at the UFH “Baa-bas” rugby team while he was studying. However, Loyiso Nongxa did not stop there as he obtained his D.Phil from the University of Oxford in 1982.

Career

Loyiso Nongxa has been a lecturer in mathematics at several universities in South Africa. He has been a lecturer at the University of Fort Hare and the University of the Western Cape. He then moved to the University of KwaZulu-Natal and then to the National University of Lesotho.

At the University of the Western Cape, he was Professor of Mathematics. He later became Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

Loyiso Nongxa is a visiting research scholar at several renowned universities, including Colorado, Hawaii, Connecticut, Harvard, and several other institutions.

In 2000, Loyiso Nongxa became Vice-Chancellor for Research at Wits and then became Vice-Chancellor in April 2002. He became Vice-Chancellor and Interim Chancellor of the university in November 2002 following the resignation of Professor Norma Reid Birley.

After being selected by the university council as a suitable candidate for the position of Vice-Chancellor, he became Vice-Chancellor in May 2003. This made him the first black person to hold the position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of the Witwatersrand.

After making many extraordinary contributions to the academic organization, Loyiso Nongxa assumed the position of President of the NRF. In July 2018, he was elected along with other candidates to serve as Vice President of the Mathematical Union.
