Maddie Ziegler was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, on September 30, 2002. She was born to Kurt Ziegler (father), who owned a mortgage company, and Melissa Gisoni (mother). She has five siblings: Mackenzie Ziegler, Michele Gisoni, Tyler Ziegler, Ryan Ziegler and Mathew Gisoni. Her grandparents were James A. Ziegler.
She has Polish, German and Italian ancestry. Her parents divorced when she was 6 years old and her mother eventually married Greg Gisoni. Maddie Ziegler started taking ballet lessons when she was two years old.
She began training with the Abby Lee Dance Company owned by Abby Lee Miller when she was 4 years old, where she studied tap, ballet, lyrical, modern, acro, jazz, and aerial dance.
