Early life and education
Maduka Okoye was born in Düsseldorf on 28 August 1999 to a Nigerian father and a German mother.
Maduka Okoye is a first cousin of the music star twins, Peter ‘Mr P’ Okoye, Mary Okoye, Tony Okoye, Lilian Okoye, Ifeanyi Okoye, Henry Okoye and Paul ‘Rudeboy’ Okoye (P-Square) and their eldest sibling/former director, Jude Okoye. He is of Igbo ethnicity from Anambra State, Nigeria.
He was raised by his parents in Enugu, Nigeria. Maduka Okoye currently lives in Düsseldorf, Germany.
He completed his secondary education at Elly-Heuss-Knapp Berufskolleg Düsseldorf. Furthermore, Maduka Okoye is also completing his secondary education at Düsseldorf.
Career
In late spring 2017, Maduka Okoye left the youth team of Bayer Leverkusen, where he started playing since 2009, to join the youth team of Fortuna Düsseldorf.
He made his first Regionalliga West signing for Fortuna Düsseldorf II against Wuppertaler SV, replacing the injured Max Schijns in the 43rd minute of the 2017 match. He finished the 2017/2018 season with 5 appearances, conceding just 1 goal and keeping 4 clean sheets, while his club finished the season in fifteenth place with 36 goals in 34 matches, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Oberliga.
During the 2018/2019 season, Maduka Okoye became the club’s regular goalkeeper. On 13 April 2019, he played his last match of the season, against SV Rödinghausen, after being replaced by goalkeeper Jannick Theissen in the following matches. He finished the season with 15 appearances, scoring 25 goals and keeping 3 clean sheets. This time, his club showed improvement compared to the previous season, finishing the season in twelfth place with 42 goals in 34 matches.
In July 2020, Maduka Okoye completed a free transfer to Eredivise side Sparta Rotterdam. He was named Sparta’s Player of the Season, keeping 10 clean sheets in 28 league matches during the 2020/21 season. On 4 August 2021, Maduka Okoye signed a contract extension until 2025.
On 30 November 2017, Nigeria National Team Head Coach, Gernot Rohr, discussed his arrangements to welcome Maduka Okoye to the Nigeria National Team ahead of the 2018 World Cup. However, the plan did not come to fruition.
On 20 February 2019, in a meeting chaired by German-born Nigerian sports journalist Oma Akatugba, Maduka Okoye implied that he was ready to welcome the Nigerian National Team and could always wear the green and white jersey.
On 22 February 2019, he was welcomed into the Nigeria U23 squad by Imama Amapakabo, the mentor of the Nigeria U23 Team for the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya U-23 but did not make the presentation due to club commitments.
On 9 May 2019, Maduka Okoye was again welcomed into the Nigeria U23 squad for the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan U-23. The football match was originally scheduled to take place between 3 and 11 June 2019. However, CAF moved it to 2–10 September 2019. The postponement was prompted by the proximity of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which were held from 21 June to 19 July 2019 in Egypt.
On 26 July 2019, Nigeria National Team mentor Gernot Rohr said he would be shifting his focus to Maduka Okoye as he hoped to solve the goalkeeping emergency that has rocked his team since Carl Ikeme’s retirement due to illness.
On 14 August 2019, Gernet Rohr welcomed Maduka Okoye to face Ukraine, the match will take place on 10 September 2019 at Dnipro-Arena.
On 13 October 2019, he made his global debut as a substitute in a friendly match against Brazil, which ended 1–1.
On 25 December 2021, he was shortlisted for the 2021 AFCON Cup of Nations by caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen as a member of Nigeria’s 28-man squad.
