He was elected Chairman of the Yobe State Democratic Party Congress in 2006.

Buni Mai Mala joined the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), the ruling party in Yobe state, in 2011 and was later appointed governor by Ibrahim Gaidam, Yobe’s special adviser on political and legislative affairs.

Mai Mala Buni was elected the first state chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Yobe State after becoming the party’s secretary in Yobe State in 2013.

In 2014, Mai Mala Buni was elected as the first National Secretary of the APC.

He was nominated, supported and selected as the APC candidate for Yobe State governorship in the 2019 election while serving as the party’s national secretary and board chairman of the Nigerian Shipping Board.

Sir Mai Mala defeated Alhaji Bello Iliya of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to become the fourth executive governor of Yobe State in the 2019 general elections.
