Career

Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire make up the American electronic music group Major Lazer. After both of them collaborated with MIA, Diplo and Switch met and decided to form the group. They combine reggae with dancehall, reggaeton, house and moombahton in their music, blending many genres.

In June 2009, the duo’s debut album, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do, was released through Downtown Records. The album was produced at Jamaica’s Tuff Gong Studios and included additional production from Afrojack and Crookers, with vocals from a number of notable artists, including Santigold, Vybz Kartel, Ward 21, Busy Signal, Nina Sky, Amanda Blank, and Mr. Vegas.

According to Diplo, Switch eventually left the band in late 2011 due to creative differences, and Jillionaire and Walshy Fire were brought in to replace him. They had a very active year in 2012. Along with collaborating with Rita Ora on their debut album Ora and No Doubt on Push and Shove, they were also working on a new album, eventually titled Free the Universe, and a fall tour.

Major Lazer announced that their album Free the Universe would be released in April of that year after signing with independent record label Secretly Canadian. They embarked on a spring tour to promote the album.

In 2015, the group returned with a new album Peace Is the Mission.

The song peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite Rihanna and Nicki Minaj initially being offered the song and declining it. Additionally, the song has risen to become the eighth most viewed video on YouTube with over 1.5 billion views, making it the most streamed song of all time on Spotify.

In 2016, Major Lazer teased their upcoming album, Cold Water, featuring Justin Bieber, which was later confirmed to be titled Music Is the Weapon. Before joining Jack U, his other band with Skrillex, Diplo collaborated with the Canadian beauty.

Cold Water’s chart performance was even better. The single, released in late July, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

FXX premiered the Major Lazer animated series on April 16, 2015.

Major Lazer has also collaborated with the likes of Ice Prince, Jidenna, DJ Snake, Wale, Dua Lipa, Wizkid, Mr Eazi, K4Mo, Beyoncé, Shatta Wale, Nasty C, Patoranking, Burna Boy, Kranium, Kizz Daniel, Tory Lanez, Cashmere Cat, PartyNextDoor, Justin Bieber, MØ, Anne-Marie, DJ Maphorisa, Travis Scott, Camila Cabello and many more.
