“The Substance” star shared that Charli XCX’s music was the inspiration for the character Sue.

On October 22, Brut shared an interview clip on platform X (formerly Twitter) asking co-stars Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore about the songs they listen to to portray their characters.

Qualley, who plays Sue on “The Substance,” responded by referencing “Brat Summer,” a term for the aesthetic and bohemian lifestyle inspired by Charli XCX kid album, “You know, it’s funny that to me, it’s like a wild time in the way the universe works because we have summer kidRight? With Charli XCX.”

“I listened to Charli as my inspiration for ‘Sue’ because she has so many great songs about the ‘Pump It Up’ girls,” Qualley continued. “For me, I get my ‘Sue’ energy from Charli’s old music, so that’s where my head goes.”

“The Substance” tells the story of a fading celebrity, Elisabeth Sparkle (played by Moore), who uses a black market drug to create a younger version of herself. Sue, who is younger, exudes more star factor and appeal than Sparkle.

Charli XCX is known for releasing songs filled with energy and power, which has influenced Qualley’s portrayal of the charismatic character.

On the other hand, Moore replied that she preferred silence before sharing a laugh with Qualley. “It’s like a world absent. Everything is empty,” she shared. “It’s like it needs to be like it’s nothing.”

“Yeah, that makes sense,” Qualley added.
