early life
Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1969 in Huntington, New York, USA. Her name comes from the song “They Call the Wind Maria”, which was first performed in the 1951 Broadway musical “Paint Your Wagon”.
She is the youngest of three children of Patricia Carey, an Irish-born former opera singer and voice teacher, and Alfred Roy Carey, an African-American, black Venezuelan-American aerospace engineer.
Her Venezuelan grandfather, Francisco Nez, took the Kelly name after immigrating to New York. Patricia Kelly’s family disowned her because she married a black man. Due to racial tensions, the Kelly family was unable to integrate into the community.
While they lived in Huntington, neighbors poisoned the family dog and burned their car. Mariah Carey had little contact with her father after her parents divorced, and her mother worked multiple jobs to support the family.
