Mariah Carey faces legal battle with brother Morgan following death of mother and sister

Mariah Carey is about to go to court.

The “Always Be My Baby” singer has been ordered to appear in court by January 31, 2025 as part of an ongoing legal battle with her brother, Morgan Carey. Morgan’s lawsuit is the result of claims Mariah made in her memoir, Meaning of Mariah Careywhere she accused Morgan of selling drugs and accused him of violence. Morgan is now suing her for defamation.

In the book, Mariah details an altercation between Morgan and her parents.

“It took twelve policemen to separate my brother and father. The huge bodies of the men, all wrapped around each other like a whirlwind, came crashing down on the living room. I was a little girl with very few memories of a brother who protected me. More often than not, I felt I had to protect myself from him, and sometimes I found myself protecting my mother from him as well,” she wrote.

Morgan has denied all allegations of violence against his parents and has denied ever selling drugs.

“I would describe it as common knowledge within the internal team at the time. [Morgan] was heavily involved in the Manhattan nightlife and often stockpiled cocaine and supplied it to members of the nightlife groups with whom he socialized,” Mariah wrote in her book.

According to court documents obtained by ContactMorgan claims the memoir has damaged his reputation and is now suing for unspecified damages.

Mariah responded to the lawsuit, saying her statements were “true or substantially true.” She had previously asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed, and for the most part, it was. However, the court ruled that Morgan could still sue Mariah over the passages related to the drug trafficking claims. The court also said Mariah “has the right to seek limitations on the scope of discovery.”

News of an impending deposition comes shortly after Mariah and Morgan lost their mother, Patricia Carey, and sister, Alison Carey, on the same day. Mariah confirmed the news of their passing in a statement to Everybody.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother over the weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the singer shared on August 27. “I feel blessed to have been with my mother during the final week before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” Mariah concluded.
