Early Life & Education

Marine Le Pen, now 55 years old, was born on August 5, 1968 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.

She is the youngest of three daughters born to Jean-Marie Le Pen, a Breton politician and former paratrooper, and his first wife, Pierrette Le Pen.

Le Pen was baptized on 25 April 1969 at La Madeleine Cathedral in Paris. She grew up with her two older sisters, Yann and Marie Caroline.

During her childhood, Le Pen experienced a traumatic event when a bomb meant for her father exploded in the stairwell of their apartment building while they slept. Fortunately, the explosion did not harm Le Pen or her family.

She attended Lycée Florent Schmitt in Saint-Cloud for her studies. However, when Le Pen was 16 years old, her mother left the family, leaving her with immense pain and feelings of abandonment. Her parents finally divorced in 1987.

Le Pen grew up in a Roman Catholic family. She married Franck Chauffroy, a business executive affiliated with the National Front, in 1995.

Together, they have three children named Jehanne, Louis and Mathilde. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 2000.

In 2002, Le Pen married Eric Lorio, national secretary of the Front National and former adviser for the regional elections in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The couple later divorced in 2006.

Le Pen’s most important achievement in the National Front was winning the party leadership election in 2011. She won 67.6% of the vote, defeating Bruno Gollnisch and succeeding her father as president party.

In 2012, she ran for president of France and came third in the first round of the election. Le Pen launched her second presidential bid in 2017, where she came second in the first round and faced Emmanuel Macron in the second round. Although she did not win, she received significant support, receiving 33.9% of the vote.

Le Pen declared herself French presidential candidate for the third time in the 2022 election. She won second place in the first round with 23.2% of the vote, qualifying for the second round with Macron.
