Early life

Maryam Sanda is the daughter of Maimuna Aliyu, former CEO of Aso Savings and Loans.

Her mother was arrested by ICPC in 2019 for alleged fraud and embezzlement of $360,000.

Story

Maryam Sanda made national news when it was revealed that she was the one who stabbed her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, to death.

The couple had been arguing before the incident on November 18, 2017 at their home in Maitama, Abuja.

The couple married in 2015. Their first child, a girl, was just six months old at the time of her husband’s death. She was also pregnant with another child, a boy, who she gave birth to a few months later.

Her late husband, Bello, was the son of a former minister and the nephew of Bello Haliru, the former national chairman of the PDP.

On the other hand, Maryam Sanda denied stabbing her husband and claimed that she hit him with a Shisha bottle and he tripped on the bottle, injuring him.

She was charged with murder by the Abuja High Court and remanded in custody.

She was later released on bail in March 2018 when it was reported that she was pregnant. She gave birth to a baby boy on August 7, 2018.

Her trial resumed in November 2018.

The FCT High Court convicted her of murdering her husband in January 2020.

Death sentence

Judge Yusuf Halilu sentenced him to death by hanging.

She appealed the death sentence in February 2020.

On December 4, 2020, the appeals court upheld the high court’s verdict, sentencing Maryam Sanda to death for killing her husband.
