Early life and education
Mathew Allan Leckie, now 32 years old, was born on February 4, 1991 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Growing up in Melbourne’s western suburbs with her sister Jessica, Leckie originally intended to play Australian rules football.
His family supported Essendon and Box Hill and it seemed like he was destined for an AFL career, but things changed when he moved to a school in Sunshine North with a more multicultural student population.
Leckie’s early football career began with the Brimbank Stallions and then the Bulleen Lions, both in the Victorian State Division 1.
During his time playing for the Bulleen Lions, he attracted the attention of Adelaide United, and in September 2009 he signed a two-year professional contract with the club.

Mathew Leckie’s wife, Laura Friese, is a German beauty who captured his heart. The couple got married on May 28, 2016, after meeting in Germany, where Leckie played in the Bundesliga.
They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Olivia Leckie Valentina, in August 2017.

Career
Leckie made his A-League debut on 18 September 2009, for Adelaide United, coming on as a 75th-minute substitute against Melbourne Victory.
He quickly made his mark when he scored the winning goal in his AFC Champions League debut against Pohang Steelers on 24 February 2010. Leckie’s impressive performances earned him recognition as one of Australia’s best young players.
In 2011, Leckie moved to Germany, signing for Borussia Mönchengladbach. He scored his first goals for the club in a friendly against Aberdeen, netting twice in a 5–2 win.
During his career in Germany, Leckie was loaned to FSV Frankfurt before moving to the club in 2013. After his time with FSV Frankfurt, he joined FC Ingolstadt 04 in 2014.
Leckie’s time at FC Ingolstadt 04 was particularly notable as the club were promoted to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2014–15 season.
He scored a number of goals during his Bundesliga tenure, including a memorable strike against FC Augsburg. In 2017, Leckie joined Hertha BSC, where he continued to make significant contributions on the pitch.
