Personal life

On March 15, 1996, a 21-year-old woman called the police and said that two men had broken into her hotel room and raped her. That same evening, Greg Dietrich and Matt Patricia were charged, arrested, and released on bail.

Matt Patricia was convicted by a Texas jury of aggravated sexual assault, a crime punishable by life in prison.

Although the trial began in January 1997, the complainant’s request to dismiss the case was granted when the victim admitted that she could not “bear the rigour and stress of the trial”.

In 2009, Matt Patricia was reported to have married his longtime girlfriend, Raina Patricia. The couple has three children named Giamina Patricia, Dominic Patricia, and Dante Patricia.

Career

In 1996, Matt Patricia began his coaching career as a graduate assistant while still a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He worked with Hoffman Air & Filtration Systems in East Syracuse, New York, as an applications engineer for two years.

Matt Patricia received a job offer from Westinghouse Electric Company after receiving his degree, but he chose to return to football and became the defensive backs coach for Amherst College from 1999 to 2000. He transferred to Syracuse University in 2001 and worked there for three seasons as a graduate offensive assistant for the team.

In 2004, the year the Patriots won their third Super Bowl championship at Super Bowl XXXIX, Matt Patricia became an assistant coach on the offensive staff under head coach Bill Belichick.

Matt Patricia was brought on as the Patriots’ assistant offensive line coach in 2005 after Jeff Davidson, assistant offensive line/linebackers coach, resigned.

The following season, Matt Patricia was reassigned to defensive backs coach for the 2006 campaign.

Matt Patricia was hired as head coach of the Detroit Lions on February 5, 2018. His status was investigated in May 2018 after news outlets learned that he had been accused of sexual assault in 1996.

Rod Wood, the Detroit Lions team president, initially responded, “I don’t know anything about this,” but a few hours later, he responded, “I am extremely pleased with the interview and hiring process for Matt Patricia.

I can say with 100% certainty that everything I discovered about this man only confirmed what I already knew about him and in no way changed our decision to hire him as our head coach.”

Matt Patricia, along with general manager Bob Quinn, were both fired by the Lions on November 28, 2020. This came after his skills received a lot of criticism.

The shooting came after the 4-5 Lions dropped to 4-7 following two consecutive losses: a 20-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers on November 22 (the Lions’ first shutout since 2009) and a 41-25 loss to the Houston Texans on November 26 in the Lions’ annual Thanksgiving Day game.
