Early life and education
Matthew Whitaker was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, to Mae and Moses Whitaker. He was born three months premature, weighing less than two pounds, and was given a less than 50 percent chance of survival. He was born on April 3, 2001.
He was blinded by retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a condition he was later diagnosed with. He played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on a mini Yamaha piano he received as a birthday present on his third birthday. Matthew Whitaker had heard the song before and was able to play it by ear.
Matthew Whitaker began studying piano at the age of five at the Philomon M. D’Agostino Greenberg School of Music, a conservatory for the blind and visually impaired in New York.
Because of his impeccable pitch, he learned to play the piano primarily by ear, but he also learned to read Braille sheet music. He attended the Harlem School for the Arts, where he learned to play the organ, percussion, clarinet, and bass guitar, as well as classical and jazz piano.
Matthew Whitaker received a grant from the American Jazz Foundation at age nine and attended the Manhattan School of Music’s Pre-College Jazz Program as a teenager. Matthew Whitaker’s career has been inspired by musicians and jazz artists such as Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Barry Harris, Erroll Garner, and Thelonious Monk.

In April 2017, Matthew Whitaker won the first place in the Fox Apollo Theater Showtime program after appearing on The Ellen Show and Fox’s Apollo Theater Showtime.
