Biography
Mavuso Walter Msimang (born 19 October 1941) is a veteran political party member and Chief of Communications of MK in the uMkhonto we Sizwe military high command. He is also a former respected member of the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa.
Mavuso Msimang was a fearless man. Because of his tenacity and fierce nature, he was loved by many South Africans. He played a notable role in the overthrow of apartheid in South Africa.
Today, Mavuso Msimang is better known as the former Chief Executive Officer of South African National Parks. He served for 30 years and held various roles in environmental management, private enterprise and government.

Early life and education
Mavuso Msimang was born on 19 October 1941. He attended primary school in Jobstown, a small town west of Newcastle, where he grew up.
Then, in 1960, he attended Vryheid’s Inkamana High School, a Catholic-owned missionary school.
In 1976, Mavuso Msimang graduated from the University of Zambia with a Bachelor of Science degree in entomology, focusing on biochemistry.
He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from an International University based in California.
Personal life
Mavuso Msimang found and married his wife, simply identified as Ntombi Msimang, during his time in Zambia.

Career
In the early 1960s, Mavuso Msimang was posted to the ANC military base in Kongwa, Tanzania, and in 1967 he became MK’s Chief of Communications for the uMkhonto we Sizwe military high command. From the 1960s until the early 1990s, MK was a banned organization fighting to overthrow the apartheid regime in South Africa.
Mavuso Msimang moved to Zambia. A large group of ANC members from South Africa migrated to Zambia. It was here that he met his accountant wife, Ntombi Msimang.
After the end of apartheid, he returned to Durban, South Africa, with his family, where he took up business consulting work until he was appointed CEO of South African Tourism. Mavuso Msimang was appointed CEO of South African National Parks in 1997, following a significant restructuring process that began in 1994.
From 2003 to 2007, Mavuso Msimang served as the Chief Executive Officer of the State Information Technology Agency before being appointed Director-General of the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2007. He resigned in 2010.
He is a founding member of the African Parks Network and in 2021 he was made an Honorary Member of the Board of Directors.
