Selamawi Asgedom (born 29 September 1976), known professionally as Mawi Asgedom, is an author and speaker. He is a refugee of Ethiopian and Eritrean descent.
His name can also be pronounced as Mawi Asgedom (shortened). He was born in Adi Wahla in Tigray Province, Ethiopia. As a child, he was separated from his parents for about two years due to the war in Ethiopia.
So he fled to Sudan, leaving his parents behind. His parents later found him and they lived in Sudan for three years.
Mawi Asgedom became an author and public speaker. He is the author of “Of Beetles and Angels,” A Boy’s Remarkable Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard, and The Code: The 5 Secrets of Teen Success.
Both books are based on his story, both inspirational and motivational, so his autobiography, Of Beetles and Angels, was selected as a community book by Springfield, Pennsylvania and 2,378 people read the book there.
Daytime TV host Oprah Winfrey called the interview with Mr. Mawi one of her 20 memorable moments in October 2005.
Of Beetles and Angels was also selected as the first citywide reading program in Evanston, Illinois with events planned throughout the 2007–2008 school year.
Waukegan High School even named their Monday Counseling Lesson Plan ad “Mawi Mondays,” where students do various activities related to Mawi Asgedom. He has visited high school readers throughout the year.
Mawi Asgedom’s memoir was also read by the city of Philadelphia and Hatboro-Horsham High School as part of the ‘One Book, One School’ program.

Early life
Mawi Asgedom was born on September 29, 1976 in Adi Wahla in Tigray province, Ethiopia.
His siblings are Tewolde Asgedom, Mehret Asgedom, Mulu Asgedom and Hntsa Asgedom.
His father and mother’s names were Haileab Asgedom and Tsege Asgedom. After three years in a refugee camp in Sudan, they all left for the United States. Mawi Asgedom was only seven years old at the time. Life in the United States was wonderful for him and his family.
They stayed in the Chicago suburb of Wheaton, Illinois, where he played high school basketball and ran track. He was the best in his league because of his dedication and hard work.
He studied very hard and graduated with honors from Harvard University, receiving a degree in American history. Because he was very confident and spoke fluently, he had the opportunity to give the commencement speech at the 1999 graduation ceremony.
When Mawi Asgedom was very young, he was separated from his parents for about two years because of the war in Ethiopia. So he ran away to Sudan, leaving his parents behind. Later, his parents found him and they lived in Sudan for three years.
