Sophia Nomvete on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power may be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, but some of the characters are entirely new creations. And among those new entities, Sophia Nomvete gets the chance to play a dwarf princess, “Disa,” who marries Durin IV (Owain Arthur).
Recalling her audition, Sophia shared that she had an advantage over the others because the dwarf princess was “maternal,” and she was about eight days away from giving birth to her daughter. “I thought, well, you can’t get much more maternal than that,” the actress joked.
However, the actress initially had no idea when she auditioned for the role. But when she did audition, it felt like “a dream come true on a personal level and on a career level.” And not just because she’s the first female black dwarf to appear on screen or touch Tolkien’s work, but because she’s a “mother, and being able to nurture this character, a princess,” is everything she believes “this world and this franchise needs and should be really proud of.”
In case you haven’t seen the show, the character of Sophia is one of the “cogs that keep Khazad-dûm in motion.” Using her talents, intelligence, and strength, the princess helps rule what was a prosperous and vibrant kingdom at the time—a society very different from the crumbling underworld we saw during the events of The Lord of the Rings.
But despite her quirky performance, she has faced some racist trolls arguing about the diverse cast of characters in the new Middle-earth fantasy. She responded, “I have to look at the bigger picture, and the bigger picture is that I’m here.”
