Meet Deadliest Catch Jacob Hutchins! His Age, Married, Net Worth

Jacob Hutchins has a dream—the dream of becoming the first African-American crabbing captain in the Bering Sea. So, to challenge himself and learn from the best, he boards the Wizard, only to start off on the wrong foot with the ship’s title!

Read on for Jacob Hutchins Biography to learn more about this dreamer.

Jacob Hutchins on the Deadliest Arrest

Jacob Hutchins is one of the new overseas sailors introduced by Wizard in season 19 of Deadliest Catch. He dreams of becoming the first person of color to captain a crab fishing boat in the Bering Sea, and to do so, he works harder and isn’t afraid to speak his mind.

“I know the industry is changing and I’m not sure what’s going to happen but while things are going well, I’m going to try to be a captain,” Jacob shared.

However, things didn’t go so well for the ambitious man, who received two warnings from Captain Keith Colburn. On the show, Jacob — who had just been demoted after a botched crab trap incident — said he liked being the bait. Keith responded that it was a good thing, because “he’s going to be here for a while,” before Jacob retorted, “Okay, because it’s far away from you. That’s what I like.”

Keith was clearly losing his cool. “Hey! You’re starting your day like this again,” he shouted at the sailor. “No, you’re not bait anymore. You’re in your room. Go away. You’re done.”

Jacob then confronted the captain, “I don’t know what it is about me that bothers you, but you’ve got to get over it, man.” Keith in turn asked one of his deckhands, deckhand Robby, “I mean, this guy, Robby? Robby’s one of the few deckhands I’ve ever had that got fired on this ship that came back and worked on it, okay? But what can I do for you, Robby?”

“Say some s-,” Robby replied. “I disrespected the captain, and you didn’t.”

Realizing he had made a mistake, Jacob said, “I didn’t mean to upset you. I’m sorry for disrespecting you, Monte. And I’m sorry for disrespecting you too, Keith. I’ll listen to what you have to say. Can I help these people, please?”

The captain, still waiting to hear the same words, gave Jacob one more chance before advising him to go out there and “work hard” to prove his worth.

What is Jacob Hutchins net worth?

Jacob Hutchins has earned a net worth of under $300 thousand as of 2023. It is reported that in Deadliest Catch, he earned around $15,000 to $50,000 per season.

The dreamer boarded his first fishing boat on January 10, 2011. “I didn’t have a father to give me a career, to give me a boat,” he recalls. “The people I worked with knew they were going to be fishermen from the moment they could think for themselves. They had their lives laid out for them.”

As a newcomer and, more importantly, a person of color, the job wasn’t easy for him. “There’s a lot of racism in Westport and a lot of ignorant people that I have to navigate. That’s just part of being African American,” he explains.

However, a few months later, he got on a boat with “very nice people who could see past my differences” and things got easier. By September 2017, Jacob joined F/V Saga. Six months later, he joined F/V ERLA – N and worked there for a year before finally joining F/V Early Dawn in January 2019.

In September 2022, while working at F/V Early Dawn, Jacob received an invitation to board the F/V Wizard. So he jumped on board and became a reality TV star.

In addition to crabbing, Jacob enjoys singing. His love of music dates back to his childhood when he sang hymns/classical music and played trumpet at Sylvan Way Baptist Church and Bremerton High School. It’s no surprise that he often wrote poems and songs while working on the Bering Sea.

In 2020, he even formed a band called The Jacob Hutchins Band — shifting from classical to jazz. Find them on Youtube @jacobhutchinsband
