Meet Dr. Dolly Theis, Wife of Dr. Xand van Tulleken
While some people propose with flowers and fireworks, Dr. Xand van Tulleken chose to do so after a trip with his future wife, Dr. Dolly Theis.
“We shared a car and cycled all over London, it was like a Richard Curtis film playing over and over in my head,” Xand recalled when he shared the news of his engagement on BBC morning live in September 2022.
The presenter later shared the good news on Twitter, saying, “We’re engaged! The *official* announcement was of course on BBC Morning Live. Couldn’t be happier! I’m here to hear everyone’s proposal stories. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND traveling anywhere in a tandem (If you’ve met your significant other).”
Similarly, Dolly shared a few photos from her engagement on Twitter with the caption, “The level of happiness is indescribable!! We are floating & have been blown away by all the cutest messages.” She later added, “Hearts are EXPLOSING. Can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend, my One and Only, my perfect person, I love you to a star and back.”
Before Dolly, Xand had a brief relationship with his ex-girlfriend, who was also a paramedic. The two first met as emergency medical workers while responding to a cyclone in Burma. A few months after they broke up, Xand’s ex-girlfriend went to North Korea. But to his surprise, Xand’s ex-girlfriend was pregnant with their son!
Fortunately, when they parted ways amicably, Xand had the opportunity to be a part of her son’s childhood. “It would have been easier if she had never told me what happened, but instead she made a big effort to include me; to let me be a father,” Xand explains.

In 2022, Dr. Dolly Theis worked as a “Research Associate” at the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge for almost a year.
There, her research examined government policy processes and the use of evidence in the UK. Specifically, she examined how policy entrepreneurs and policymakers influence policy processes to achieve policy change, including the information and frameworks they use to make their arguments, and how they understand, engage with and use epidemiological and public health research in this process.
Her research was supervised by Professor Martin White and Dr Dennis Grube.
Before joining the MRC Epidemiology Unit, Dolly worked as a Policy Researcher at the Centre for Social Justice for a year and a month. Her work there was to establish the link between childhood obesity and social deprivation.
Additionally, from December 2010 to October 2013, Dolly served as a “Parliamentary Researcher” at the House of Lords.
Dolly also volunteers for a number of companies including Forward Assist Charity, Big Tent Ideas Festival, Tempus Novo, 50:50 Parliament, Top Tier Impact and Evening Standard.
