Boxer Gervonta Davis was born to Garrin Davis and Kenya Brown. Like most kids in the city, he had a difficult childhood. His mother was a drug user and his father was in prison for selling drugs. Gervonta Davis’s childhood was the kind that usually doesn’t end well. “I was separated from my parents when I was 4 or 5 years old,” Davis said.
As a child and teenager, Gervonta was bounced around from home to home, sometimes in foster care, and sometimes with relatives. But over the years, one thing remained constant in his life, and that was his coach, Ford.
“The boy was about 7 years old when one of his uncles took him to the gym,” Ford said. Ford saw a reflection of himself in the boy who had no real home outside the gym but found a home inside it.
“When he got into trouble as a kid, no one wanted him around,” Ford said. “He just wanted attention, and people always pushed him away. I coached a lot of kids, but [Gervonta] always there. Every time I turned around, he was still there. He became like a son to me.”
Gervonta has something else that makes him stand out. “He’s very talented and he listens,” Ford says. “I don’t have to tell him twice what to do.”

Garrin was interviewed by the New York Times about his in-and-out days in Gervonta’s life because of his time in prison. He said Upton Boxing Club allowed his son to avoid the temptations of the streets that have led so many others to their doom. But it took effort. “He sacrificed a lot,” said Garrin, who has been sober since his last stint in prison. “A lot of the friends he had, because he chose to come here, he wouldn’t have ended up where he is.”

Kenya Brown is the mother of Gervonta Davis.
On Gervonta’s birthday in 2014, Kenya posted: “On this day 20 years ago I went into labor with my youngest son. I was struggling at the time, I had no family, the only people there were God first and foremost, his late Aunt Kim Davis and Uncle Redds, may they rest in peace without them. While Gervonta Davis’ father was in prison, he lived with his mother and grandmother. When Gervonta was 7, Gervonta and one of his brothers moved in with his grandmother, after being bounced between a group home and their uncle’s house. Being new to West Baltimore, the boys were quickly forced to fend for themselves.
Davis’ mother, Kenya Brown, said school officials contacted her about the boy’s frequent fights and told her he was a “menace to society,” but she insisted he was not the instigator. After her brother brought Gervonta to Upton and he started playing sports, “people really started challenging him more,” Kenya said. New York Times.
“He was light-skinned, always short,” Kenya told the paper. “He had to get stitches because someone hit him on the head.”
