Leigh grew up in Brisbane, Australia as a motorcycle enthusiast. As a child, he played all sorts of sports, but competitively. “My dad was a motorcycle enthusiast, my grandfather raced motorcycles. So motorcycles were our life. We were the family in the neighborhood where everyone else was playing cricket or football or swimming or something or tennis, the Diffeys were the motorcycle family,” he adds.
Leigh didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a sportscaster. He majored in education in college and worked as a school teacher. He didn’t have a journalism or communications degree, and eventually got into television through his commentary work. The two-wheel enthusiast started out announcing at a nearby motocross track in Brisbane, Australia. From there, he worked his way up the motocross commentary ladder, reporting live for the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship.
However, announcing in the United States wasn’t even the 53-year-old’s ideal career path when he first took the mic as a radio announcer. In 1996, the former gym teacher reached a turning point in his career when he decided to become a full-time announcer. He hasn’t looked back since.
