Meet Robynne Chutkan, Sister Judge Tanya Chutkan

In 2019, 31 naturalized U.S. citizens took the Oath of Allegiance in the Rotunda of the National Archives in Washington, D.C. In her closing remarks, Judge Tanya Chutkan shared a glimpse of her own journey to naturalization after leaving her native Jamaica and mentioned her sister.

“I know this is a special day for you and your family,” Tanya said. “When I say I know, I really know, because I am an immigrant too. I remember this day very well. In fact, my sister was naturalized right here in the Rotunda many years ago. I know this is a special day, and I know how long and hard you have worked to get here.”

Tanya’s sister is Robynne Chutkan, a highly respected person in her field.

When Tanya was nominated by former President Barack Obama to serve as a district judge for the District of Columbia, she also mentioned her sister and husband. “I want to thank my sister, Dr. Robynne Chutkan, who is here, and her husband, Eric Mann, who is from the Department of Homeland Security,” Tanya said.

Born to Winston and Noelle Chutkan, Robynne is one of three children. Robynne and Tanya also have an older brother named Dr. Norman Chutkan. Norman is an orthopedic spine surgeon in Phoenix, AZ and has over 32 years of experience in the medical field.

Dr. Robynne Chutkan received her undergraduate degree from Yale University and her medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she also served as chief resident and completed her internship and residency. She completed her residency in gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Robynne Chutkan, MD, FASGE is a board-certified gastroenterologist and author of the digestive health publications Gutbliss, The Microbiome Solution, The Bloat Cure, and The Anti-Viral Gut.
