Viviana Hollenbeck’s work

According to her LinkedIn, Viviana is the co-owner of Blue Ox Millworks. She was fearless in supporting her husband during the economic downturn of the 70s. Before Viviana met her husband, Eric started a logging company with 3 partners and a $300 bank loan.

They used the money to buy an old chainsaw, a set of pliers, half a tank of gas, and a small blue truck they called Ophelia Bumps. They rented a building, the old North Mountain Electric Company building, for $50 a month to store their trucks and cables. The building began to fall apart in 1973, and with the help of a bank, they bought the property in installments of $600 a month.

Viviana helped her husband run the business during the Depression, theirs being the only business not affected by the Depression. Furthermore, the company has grown from a salvage logging company into a full-fledged manufacturing facility, blacksmith shop, foundry, pharmacy, print shop, pottery shop, stained glass and fabric shop, working history museum, high school, veterans program, radio station, and non-profit organization.

Today, Blue Ox Millworks is a landmark in Eureka, California, and Eric’s mastery of woodworking has helped him reach that pinnacle of success. Follow Blue On on Facebook (@blueoxmillworks) and Instagram (@blueoxmillworks). It’s one of only eight Victorian mills in the country.

Viviana, along with her husband, also runs Blue Ox Community High School, an alternative school for at-risk youth in conjunction with the Humboldt County Office of Education. They originally met after Viviana moved from Southern California and stayed with him one summer in their early days.

They have run this school for 19 years and started to add more schools since 2018.
