early life
Megalyn Echikunwoke was born in Spokane, Washington, to Onigwe Echikunwoke and Anita Laurie Echikunwoke.
Her father is Nigerian, from the Igbo tribe, and her mother is American. Onigwe is a survivor of the Nigerian Civil War who immigrated to the United States.
When she was four, her father died of liver cancer from complications of a gunshot wound he sustained during the Civil War.
Megalyn and her siblings were raised by their mother in Arizona.
