Melanie Bloom’s work
Melanie Bloom is the National Patient Advocate for the DVT Prevention Coalition. She began her work after the death of her first husband. She had never even heard of DVT before David died. Risk factors include a person’s lifestyle, being over 40, being overweight, smoking, being hospitalized, being a woman using birth control or hormone replacement therapy, and having cancer, she said.
“It’s actually a combination of having three or more of these risk factors at any one time,” says Melanie. “For example, my husband, who is 39, is healthy, but he has limited mobility in his legs, sleeping every night in a tank with his chin pulled up to his knees, and sitting on a long flight, for example, can cause similar restricted blood flow in his legs. People should drink plenty of water to keep their blood from becoming sluggish. But they say that if you have three or more of these factors at any one time, that’s when you should be aware of your risk of developing DVT. It can feel like pain or swelling in your legs, but if the clot breaks off and hits your lungs, it can feel like shortness of breath or chest pain, sometimes people describe it almost as if they’re having a heart attack.”
Furthermore, Melanie was very supportive of her husband’s career. They met in 1988 in Wichita, Kansas, when David, a reporter for a television station there, moved into the apartment next door. They became a couple and were married in March 1990. David’s career with NBC took them to Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington as White House correspondents, then to New York, where he was a weekend anchor for “The Today” show, and finally to Baghdad.
