Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 3, 1985) is an American former professional swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time. He is widely regarded as the most successful swimmer in the history of the sport.

Early life
Award-winning swimmer Michael Phelps was born on June 3, 1985, to Michael Fred Phelps Sr. and Deborah Sue Phelps. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and was named after his father.
He comes from a family of five and is the youngest of two children. He has two older siblings: Whitney Phelps and Hilary Phelps. He grew up in the Rodgers Forge neighborhood of Towson.

Before retiring, his father worked as a Maryland state police officer while his mother was a middle school principal. When Michael Phelps was nine years old, his parents divorced. He has English, German, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh ancestry.

Michael Phelps attended Town High School and graduated with high honors in 2003.
He then went to the University of Michigan to train and take classes. However, he did not study for a degree. He was trained by a coach, Bob Bowman, who had been his mentor since he was eleven years old.
Career
Since his international debut, Michael Phelps has won 82 medals in major international long-distance swimming competitions. He has won 65 gold medals, 14 silver medals and three bronze medals at the Olympics, World Championships and Pan-Pacific Championships. He is the world record holder for long-distance swimming in the men’s 400-meter individual medley.
He is a former world record holder in the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley.
Michael Phelps has won American Swimmer of The Year eleven times, World Swimmer of The Year eight times and FINA Swimmer of The Year twice (2012 & 2016). In 2008, Sports Illustrated named him Sportsman of The Year. He is widely considered to be the greatest swimmer of all time and one of the greatest athletes in world history.
Michael Phelps is the founder of the Michael Phelps Foundation. He founded this non-governmental organization with an initial funding of $1 million. The foundation is interested in developing the sport of swimming and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
