Michael Pettaway Tomlin is the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL).

Since joining the Steelers in 2007, he has led the team to 11 playoff appearances, won seven division titles, guided them to three AFC championship games and appeared twice in the Super Bowl, get a win in Super Bowl XLIII.

Early life and education

Mike Tomlin is currently 52 years old and was born on March 15, 1972 in Hampton, Virginia. He was born to parents Ed and Julia Tomlin. He is the youngest of two brothers. His brother Eddie has three and a half years of seniority.

Their father, Ed Tomlin, left his mark on the football field during his days at Hampton Academy in the 1960s before being drafted by the Baltimore Colts.

He later showed off his skills for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. Unfortunately, Ed Tomlin passed away in January 2012 from an apparent heart attack in Ocala, Florida, at the age of 63.

Career

Tomlin began his coaching journey in 1995, serving as the wide receivers coach at Virginia Military Institute under head coach Bill Stewart.

He then transferred to the University of Memphis in 1996, taking a position as a graduate assistant, where he contributed to the development of defensive backs and special teams.

After a brief stint at the University of Tennessee at Martin, Tomlin found himself coaching defensive backs at Arkansas State University in 1997. His coaching path then took him to the University of Cincinnati .

In the National Football League, Tomlin’s expertise was evident when he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001 as their defensive backs coach under the leadership of Tony Dungy.

It was here that Tomlin honed the Tampa 2’s defensive skills, which would become an integral part of his coaching philosophy.

His tenure with the Buccaneers, continuing under Jon Gruden, saw formidable defensive performances, with the team leading the league in total defense in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Hao never ranked lower than sixth overall during his tenure.
