Early Life & Education
MK Stalin is the third son of Tamil Nadu’s 2nd Chief Minister and DMK President M. Karunanidhi. His mother’s name was Dayalu Ammal. He was born and raised in Madras, now known as Chennai, on 1 March 1953.
His father, M. Karunanidhi, was speaking at a condolence meeting for a Soviet leader named Joseph Stalin, who died just four days after MK Stalin’s child was born. Therefore, his father decided to name his son MK Stalin.
MK Stalin studied at Madras Christian College (Chennai). He completed his pre-university studies at Vivekananda College and obtained a degree in history from Presidency College, Chennai, University of Madras in 1973. He was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by Anna University on 1 August 2009.
Personal life
MK Stalin married Durga Stalin, also known as Shantha, on 20 August 1975, and their marriage was blessed with two children. His first son is named Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is an actor and a politician.
Udhayanidhi Stalin, his eldest son, is married to Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, an Indian Tamil film director. His daughter is Senthamarai Sabareesan, a businesswoman and educationist.
She is the director of Sunshine Schools, Chennai. Senthamarai Sabareesan is married to Sabareesan Vedamurthy, a businessman and political strategist.
Like his father, MK Stalin has openly revealed that he is an atheist. But he has also said that he is not against any religious beliefs. His grandchildren are Inbanithi and Tanmaya.
Career
MK Stalin’s political career began when he was a teenager when he founded the DMK Gopalapuram Youth Wing in a tea shop with some of his friends. When he was just 14 years old, he campaigned for his uncle, Murasoli Maran, in the 1967 election.

In 1973, he was elected to the General Committee of the DMK. He was notable for being imprisoned in the Central Jail, Madras (Chennai), under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), for opposing the Emergency in 1976.
MK Stalin was beaten in custody, while a fellow DMK inmate C. Chittibabu died of injuries and police torture while defending him. He wrote his final year BA exams while in prison. He founded the DMK youth wing. In 1982, he became the DMK youth secretary, a post he held for over four decades.
In 2003, MK Stalin became the Deputy General Secretary of the DMK. In 2011, he changed constituencies for the first time in his political career, moving from Thousand Lights to Kolahur constituency on the outskirts of Chennai.
MK Stalin became the city’s first directly elected mayor in 1996. He launched a pet project called Singara Chennai (Beautiful Chennai) and was praised for improving Chennai’s infrastructure. His efforts in improving the city’s infrastructure earned him the title of Chief Thanthai (city father).
