More Sex Than Love: Blaqbonez Shows His Understanding of the Music Industry on New Album

Blaqbonez’s recent album shows that he understands the music industry better than most Nigerian hip-hop musicians. He brilliantly blends Afropop and Trap songs on this album, fully recognizing that both genres are the most important in Nigeria and the world.

Basically, Blaqbonez has rethought himself to suit the needs of the current music industry and I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy reaches the level of ubiquitous musicians like Davido and Wizkid.

This is an essential exercise for every upcoming rapper and hip-hop expert. In-person hip hop is no longer as relevant as it was somewhere in Nigeria a few years ago when a rapper like MI Abaga imprisoned the entire business world with his praise rap songs.

The focus of the Nigerian music crowd has now shifted to Afropop/Afrobeat, just like the focus of American hip-hop has shifted to trap, although we hate to let it leak out. Therefore, Nigerian hip-hop experts need to reinterpret and replicate themselves to meet the demands of the music industry.

At this point, just being a decent rapper and lyricist isn’t enough to gain notoriety and attention. Harsh remarks, statements, and quips are acceptable, but they won’t get you the recognition and consideration you deserve.

If you can, add singing to your repertoire. If you have the chance, find a voice mentor. Try the Afropop genre. Set your mind-numbing verses and passionate songs over exciting afrobeat melodies. Accomplish something different than what is expected from the change. If you want to rap at an in-your-face/unfamiliar tempo, try having your rap in a familiar dialect: Pidgin, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa. It greatly improves your odds of being financially successful in the profession.
