Who are Neelam Gill’s parents?

Neelam Gill’s parents are Rajan Gill and Harpeet Gill. She grew up in Coventry and suffered a lot of bullying because of her skin colour. In an interview with Stylist“I remember as a kid, walking to school and someone shouting ‘Paki’ out the window,” recalls Neelam. “It was so normal.”

“I get comments like, ‘Does your dad own the corner store?’ or ‘Is he a taxi driver?’ It makes me feel really angry,” Neelam added. “I could never imagine doing that to someone. It’s not something I can accept now and I’m very outspoken about it now. When I was younger, I was very insecure and I didn’t think I was beautiful because I thought being white was what made you beautiful. I always hated the colour of my skin.”

Discovered at the age of 14, Neelam debuted at Fashion Week favourite Burberry and she credits them with making her a household name.

Neelam was recruited when she was just 14. However, her parents said, “Okay, just go to school and study before going to college.”

Neelam has walked for Dior, modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch and appeared on the covers of numerous publications, including the 2014 cover of Hunger magazine shot by Rankin, which shocked the world.

Rajan shared about getting married to Neelam’s father.

“To be honest, we were both polite to each other. He worked most of the time. I was almost single-handedly trying to give the girls the best in life, I used to support them financially. I lived in a one-bedroom apartment above a shop and I also worked seven days a week,” Rajan shared about his previous marriage.

She added, “I had an office job then I worked in their supermarket. I bought myself a house after 10 years. For society and paperwork it was a marriage. When I got my own house I started sleeping with girls. Towards the end of the marriage things became toxic because we argued and fought a lot so I knew I had to leave because I could no longer paint a happy picture.”

Rajan remarried on 15 August 2009 at the age of 39 to Harpreet Gill, Neelam’s stepfather. Her parents wanted to have a low-key wedding in India, but her current husband’s family insisted on a big wedding. She added, “I was not just a grown-up bride; I was a divorced single mother marrying someone 10 years younger. I felt ashamed and embarrassed because culturally, it was not the norm.”

Rajan was born in 1970, she is now 52 years old. She works as a makeup artist and real estate developer. She attended Sidney Stringer Academy.
