Biography
Mpho Phalatse (born 7 November 1977) is a prominent South African physician and politician.
She currently serves as the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
Mpho Phalatse is a member of the African National Congress (ANC). In 2016, she was appointed as the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg by newly elected President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Early life and education
Mpho Phalatse was born on 7 November 1977 in Hebron, Pretoria. She lived with her grandmother in Hebron for the first few years of her life before moving to Mabopane with her parents.
Both are educators. Mpho Phalatse enrolled in 1994. The following year, she enrolled in Chemical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand.
During her second year at Wits University, Mpho Phalatse decided to pursue a career as a medical doctor and enrolled at Sefako Makgatho University and MEDUNSA, where she obtained her MBChB.
She graduated from medical school in 2005 and did her internship at Tembisa Hospital. She continued to volunteer at Jubilee Hospital after doing community service in Hammanskraal.
Personal life
Mpho Phalatse is the proud mother of three, although TheCityCeleb has yet to confirm the names of her children and partner.
Career
In 2006, Mpho Phalatse joined the public service, holding various positions, including that of director of clinical management at the Ministry of Health.
She was appointed Executive Mayor of Johannesburg in November 2016, becoming the city’s first female mayor.
She was elected to the position on 22 November 2021, as a member of the Democratic Alliance, becoming the first woman to hold the office of mayor of the metropolitan city, which was founded in 2000.
Mpho Phalatse is the first black female mayor of Johannesburg and the city’s second female mayor, after Jessie McPherson, who served from 1945 to 1946.
